Page is in progress.
Who decides my child is gifted?
Local District School Boards have thier own protocols and procedures for identifying gifted students. Unfortunately, a child may be identified as gifted by one District School Board, but their identification may not be recognized by another board.
How many gifted children are there in Ontario?
According to Ministry of Education statistics for the 2013-2014 school year, 1.4% of the student population of Ontario was identified as gifted. In other words, there are more than 28,000 identified gifted students identified in Ontario public schools. Among students formally identified as "exceptional", giftedness is the second largest category of exceptionality after learning disabilities. However, there are many more high-ability students in Ontario schools who are not formally identified.
